Holden White, a gay man who was violently attacked while meeting up with a date earlier this year, is pushing for hate crime charges in the case.
The 19-year-old Louisiana man was stabbed on June 20, during what should have been a date orchestrated through the dating app Grindr, which is primarily used by gay and bisexual men.

“Eventually, I saw a light,” White told the Acadiana Advocate over the weekend. “And you’re not going to go away from the light. I went towards the light. I went far enough until I woke up in the hospital.”

White woke up from a coma in a hospital several days later, when he first learned of the attack. He’d been strangled and stabbed several times in the torso — doctors said he was lucky to be alive.
Chance Seneca has since been arrested in the violent attack and White is pushing for hate crime charges. He said the 19-year-old suspect convinced him to come to his home the night of the attack and that he was specifically targeted because of his sexual identity.
“He could have done this to a woman,” White said. “Instead, he chose to do something to someone who’s gay and proud about his sexuality.”

Seneca remains in custody at the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center.
